Indian Pizza

I love pizza.  All kinds of pizza. Thin crust, medium crust, deep dish.  New York style, Chicago style, any style.  The combination of dough and sauce and cheese and toppings is something that I love.  So when I saw this recipe for Indian Pizza, I was delighted. I knew I was going to try this one!  It looked relatively simple, and I knew I could modify the recipe to my taste. Continue reading

Spaghetti Squash

Have you ever looked at one of these things and wondered what spaghetti squash is all about?  I have.  Spaghetti squash?  What does that mean?  Do you eat it with spaghetti? Does it look like spaghetti on the inside?  How can it look like spaghetti?  It’s a SQUASH!! Look at it!  Where is the spaghetti??!!  The only way to find out was to try it. Continue reading

Caramelized apple crumble

An apple a day keeps the doctor away

I love apple pie and apple tart and apple crumble.  It seems like a comforting thing to eat on a cold grey day. Especially warm apple pie or tart or crumble or whatever you have thought to make with apples.

Add some good vanilla ice cream or some lightly sweetened whipped heavy cream, and you might think you have caught a glimpse of heaven! Continue reading

Sesame noodles

I was looking for a recipe that I could prepare in advance.  Or at least prepare most of it in advance.  And it had to work for about 8 people.  I was having a potluck at home, and my contribution was the noodles and dessert.

I had been watching Ina Garten on TV and she had done a spicy szechuan noodle salad that looked pretty good, but had lots of ingredients, some of which I didn’t have.  So I kept looking.  In my Sundays at Moosewood book, I found a recipe for sesame noodles that I had been wanting to try, and this seemed like the perfect occasion to do so! Continue reading

Orange Cake with Dates and Walnuts

I was in the mood for cake.  Not chocolate cake.  Not lemon cake.  I knew I wanted cake, but didn’t know what kind of cake I was in the mood for.  So I started to look through all my cookbooks and I found a recipe for a “Date Orange Cake” in the Moosewood Restaurant Book of Desserts.  It sounded fabulous!  There was no picture, but this is how they described it: Continue reading

Spinach and Bacon Frittata

Since I knew I was going to make Irish Soda Bread, I wanted to make something to go with it.  Butter and jam are great with Irish soda bread, I wanted something a little more substantial though.  Eggs seemed an obvious choice, but I didn’t want to be cooking eggs in individual servings for 6 people.  So…..it was going to be a frittata. Continue reading

Irish Soda Bread

I was going through my recipe folder (Yes, I actually have one of those….. :-)), and found this recipe for Irish Soda Bread given to me by a neighbor.  She had made it for a potluck and I remember it as being delicious with sudden bursts of contrasting flavors from the sweet raisins and the slightly spicy caraway seeds.

Now I’m not a bread maker, but this recipe seemed to be so easy and foolproof that I had to try it.  I have found many recipes on the internet, all pretty simple, but today this is the one I used. Continue reading

Bulghur Salad

Spring is here, and that makes me want to eat lighter, healthier food.  As always, as far as possible, I like to keep things simple and use what I have at home.  And I have most of the ingredients for a lovely fresh bulgur salad.  So it’s off to the store for a few ingredients (I need other stuff for the week too) and then home to cook.  A friend of mine, N, is coming over to help and learn, which is great, as now I have a sous-chef.  Everybody should have a sous-chef! 🙂 Continue reading

Delicious Brussel Sprouts

Really?

That’s what the bf said when I told him I was making brussel sprouts for dinner.  Yes, I said, really!  The truth is, I’m not particularly fond of brussel sprouts either, but T sent me what looked like a delicious recipe and I had to try it!  Thanks T and food52!

And, as luck would have it, brussel sprouts were on sale at the grocery store.  Now that’s a sign if I ever saw one….. 😉 Continue reading

Squash and Chipotle soup

It’s a little cold and grey today, and I’m thinking soup would be good.  I don’t know much about soups as I don’t make them very often, but I know they can be a good way to use vegetables, and that’s always a good thing! I had read a recipe for a butternut squash soup in a magazine, but couldn’t remember which magazine, or exactly what the recipe said, so I rooted around the internet, and a few cookbooks, and found several recipes, but none that really appealed.  So I decided to mix and match and make my own. Continue reading
